Jose Catalan, 87, died in the crash on Monday, May 6 at the intersection of Delaware and Fernwood avenues, the Egg Harbor Township Police Department said in a news release. Officers responded to the wreck at around 2:43 a.m.

Investigators said a 19-year-old man was driving a 2006 Toyota RAV4 west on Delaware Avenue and approached the intersection. A 2010 Toyota Camry driven by Catalan was waiting at a stop sign in the southbound lane of Fernwood Avenue.

The Camry entered the intersection to cross Delaware and was hit on the driver's side by the RAV4. The impact caused both Toyotas to spin and go off the road.

Catalan was pronounced dead at the scene and an 83-year-old woman in his car was rushed to Cooper University Hospital with significant injuries. The SUV driver suffered chest pain but wasn't brought to a hospital.

Traffic was detoured for about four hours while first responders were at the crash. The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, Egg Harbor Township and AtlantiCare paramedics, and Scullville and Bargaintown firefighters also helped at the scene.

Egg Harbor Township police said the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information should call the department at 609-926-2641.
